Did I Just Say That ? // Q + A // Snail Mail Wednesday
GRACE JONES
For those of you who don't follow me on Instagram, I just started doing Snail Mail Wednesdays - #SNAILMAINWEDNESDAY - every Wednesday I will be writing 10 letters to different people who reach out on Instagram! Each Wednesday I'm going to have a different theme for the letters I send out, this past week's theme was a Question + Answer, anyone could ask me anything they pleased! I got a ton of interesting question, some of them overlapped, I will be sharing 3 today!
* I tried to keep these answers exactly the same as what I wrote each of the questioners, but I made some bad grammatical errors in my handwritten letters so I did a little editing to make it not so painful!
MAIL TIME
What makes you feel like you are glorifying God to the fullest and fulfilling what He has called you to? IF you have that on your life yet!
For me, photography has always felt like a way to show people just how beautiful they are and to how them that they are made in the image of God. If I can make/show one person how God truly sees them then I will be happy!
I think that that stems from being very self conscious and bullied as a kid and wanting to be shown by someone else that I was made perfectly in His image. If I could be that person to someone else that would be amazing! That's always been my prayer for my business, is to just help people to see their true beauty through God's eyes! While I'm photographing someone I just want them to feel loved and accepted in that moment for who they are.
What is one of your most treasured memories? Do you often reflect on how what you do is amazing as you get to capture and enhance moments like that?
I have so many memories that I treasure! The one that I always find myself thinking about is when my mom said on a Thursday "Want to go to San Francisco tomorrow?". I thought she was kidding (because it was a school day that Friday) But it was a 3 day weekend for President's Day. So I said "Sure", not thinking it was going to happen. Early the next morning she woke me up, bags packed and off we went to the airport to go to San Francisco! That weekend was so much fun and so crazy! Traveling with my mom is always an adventure! We ended up taking the craziest taxi ride through the hills of San Francisco, got lost walking around the city (we probably walked 10 miles that day) up and down up and down the hills because mom thought she knew where she was going, found the best Dim Sum place ever in Chinatown, I saw my first "real" hippy on the streets of Haight and Ashbury, got stuck in the middle of the woman Nike marathon and so much more. I have always loved my mom's spontaneitywith life - a lot of my favorite memories come from our crazy adventures!
I love capturing moments for people! I love doing family photos because I think they are so important to have as your family changes and evolves over the years, it's so fun to look back and see how you used to be. Since my parents got divorced when I was just a wee babe, I always wish I would have had more photos of my mom, dad and I together. I love seeing families together and how families interact. It's such an honor to capture life for other people.
How did you get into photography and what are some of your favorite hobbies?
I wouldn't have gotten into photography if it wasn't for my parents! My dad got me my first camera when I was in 8th grade. My mom would drive me anywhere for photography workshop or photo get togethers I wanted to go to!
When I got my first camera I instantly fell in love. I wasn't, and still am not good at expressing myself through words in person, so photography became a way for me to let what was inside, out. I was bullied a lot during school and was kind of a loner. I am so thankful for photography during that time because it really helped me cope with all of the things happening to me during school the school day! Coming back to photography was always a constant thing in my daily life - after school everyday I would sit down and try to learn something new or just go take photos!
I love hobbies, I feel like I'm more of a hobby collector that a holder of just a few hobbies. Learning new things is probably my favorite hobby, if it can be one! I start learning one thing, learn everything about it and then move onto the next thing! Right now I am learning about Energy Healing and how to cook yummy things on a paleo and Auto immune protocol diet. This winter I want to learn how to weave wall hangings!
